Danish scholar in history of ideas and an active public debater. In 2007, he was appointed professor in European and Danish history at Copenhagen Business School. Østergård is engaged in the history of identity - especially national identity - from 1500 until today; his interests are particularly related to multicultural/multiethnic states, such as Austria-Hungary and the Osmanic kingdom.
